Mumbai: A 25-year-old Air India pilot allegedly died by suicide in her flat in Mumbai, police said on Wednesday, adding that her boyfriend has been arrested on charges of abetment.
The body of a woman, Srishti Tuli, was found in her rented flat at the Kanakia Rainforest building in Andheri's Marol area on Monday. According to police, she had allegedly hanged herself using a data cable, though no suicide note was found.
The boyfriend of the woman, Aditya Pandit (27), was taken into custody on Tuesday based on a complaint filed by her family.
According to the officer from the Powai police station, in his complaint, Tuli's uncle said that Pandit used to often harass and humiliate her in public. He claimed that Pandit even used to force her to change her food habits and refrain from consuming non-vegetarian food.
The police said that Tuli had made the call to Pandit at around early hours of Monday when Pandit was going to Delhi on road saying she would kill herself.
He ran back straight to Mumbai. Finding that the door of his flat is locked, he dialled a key maker, and after opening the door, he found his girlfriend hanging on the data cable. Doctors in the SevenHills Hospital declared him dead at Andheri.
The officer said Tuli hails from Uttar Pradesh and had been staying in Mumbai since June last year. She had met Pandit while pursuing a commercial pilot course in Delhi two years ago and the two began a relationship soon after.
Pandit was charged under section 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and arrested. He was presented in court, which sent him to police custody till November 29.
