'Deeply regrettable': India after breach on Bangladesh assistant high commission premises in Agartala

NEW DELHI: The ministry of external affairs (MEA) on Monday condemned the breach of the Bangladesh assistant high commission premises in Agartala, describing the incident as "deeply regrettable" and stressed that diplomatic and consular properties should not be targeted under any circumstance.

"The incident this morning of the breach of premises at the Bangladesh assistant high commission in Agartala is very regrettable. The premises of diplomatic and consular missions should not be attacked in any circumstances," MEA said in a statement.
"The government is taking appropriate action to enhance security measures for the Bangladesh high commission here in New Delhi and their deputy/assistant high commissions in other places in the country," it said.

Demonstrators allegedly broke into the Bangladesh assistant high commission in Agartala to protest atrocities against minorities in the neighbouring country.
The breach of high commission comes after an Agartala-Kolkata bus traveling through Dhaka on Saturday reportedly came under attack in the Brahmanbaria district of Bangladesh after suffering an accident on Vishwa Road.

This is coming amid increasing tensions between India and Bangladesh, which worsened further due to increasing attacks on Hindus and places of worship in Bangladesh since Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned this year. The political uncertainty in Bangladesh is simultaneously faced with a string of mob attacks, putting the safety of the minority Hindu community in question.

This increased tension as one of Iskcon's most vocal preachers, Chinmoy Krishna Das, was arrested last October. He is an advocate of minority rights. Das was taken into custody at Dhaka airport for allegedly disrespecting the Bangladeshi flag at a rally. The charges against him remain ambiguous and he has been denied bail.

The external ministry said the Indian government had taken seriously incidents of attacks on minorities and communicated their concerns to the Bangladesh authorities.
